Faulting application WINWORD.EXE faulting module mso.dll

If that title didn’t get your attention I don’t know what will.  That is part of the error log I used today to repair a Microsoft Word 2007 error.

Whenever Word was closed, or you attempted to go into Word options, the <sarcasm>ultra helpful</sarcasm> error message would appear “Microsoft Office Word stopped working” and then close down.  I hope they paid that guy by the character.

Also, when running a find in Excel, that same error happened.  I went to the handy application logs and found that error.  The resolution for this is really easy, if you look.  The faulting module is the root cause of this issue MSO.DLL.  To fix this you will want to go to C:\program Files\common file\Microsoft Shared\Office12 on a working computer and copy the MSO.DLL file to a thumb disk or to a network share.  Then on the offending computer, copy that file down to the same path.  Issue resolved.  No muss no fuss.  No Registry entries modifications like some people suggested.

I do recommend making sure that the version and updates are the same between the two computers.  One more note.  If you are using Office 2003, the directory will be Office11 instead of 12.
